Claire’s piece: Grieving and celebrating through creating

I had the privilege to support my neighbour Claire N as she and her family grieved the loss of a family member. Claire wanted to make something to process her own feelings, to create something to remember her “aunt” by  and to gift to her “uncle”. I was honoured to be part of the process. Claire came over with pieces of fabric from her aunt’s clothing, and some dried flowers from the memorial service. Claire first practiced making a piece out of fabric from my stash before setting to work on her memorial piece. Claire was adept and was focused and created a moving piece, “toujours avec toi”.  It was a wonderful experience to be part of Claire and her family’s grieving.

As an artist working in what it is now known as Hamilton, ON, I respectfully acknowledge the land on which I create has been the site of human activity, including art making, for thousands of years. This land is in the traditional territories of the Erie, Neutral, Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee and Mississaugas peoples whose cultures and customs continue to nurture this land.
